A study by the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP) shows that the prices of items generally sought after as gifts for family and friends at this time of year are below inflation. According to the national survey, released this Wednesday (18), gift prices are, on average, 2.15% more expensive in December than in the same month in 2023, while inflation until November 2024 was 4.77 %.
FecomercioSP used a group of 50 items in the research, such as toys, electronics, flowers, books, shoes and clothes. Sneakers, for example, rose 1.88% in 12 months, while shorts are 0.76% more expensive. Some items even deflated, such as children’s shirts (-0.34%), bicycles (-3.93%), and toys (-4.46%).
Of the 50 items surveyed, only 12 had increases above 4.77% compared to last year. The products that increased the most were natural flowers (15.9%), jewelry (13.7%), air conditioning (11%), non-teaching books (9.7%), and skirts (6.98%). Those that fell the most in price were toys (-4.4%), telephone devices (-4%), bicycles (-3.9%), washing machines (-2.6%), refrigerators (-2 %).
“This is an ideal situation for Brazilian retail, which reaches the end of this year with a very low unemployment rate (6.2%, in the quarter ended in October), a higher mass of income (as a result) and greater availability credit, especially cards. Considering the various payment options, such as installments or Pix, the end of the year is expected to see strong sales in the country”, highlighted FecomercioSP, in a note.
