The ITU updates: Know the effects of the increase on the family economy

incremento para la economía familiar

Today DS N°260-2024-EF was published, where the value of the ITU by 2025, going from S/5,150 to S/5,350.

Jorge Carrillo Acosta, a finance expert at Pacífico Business School, explains the effects that this increase will have, both for families and companies.

What is the ITU?

The Tax Tax Unit or UIT is a reference value that has, mainly, three uses:

1. Calculate taxes
2. Calculate fines
3. As a parameter for other tax, labor and judicial issues (subsidies from the Mivivienda Fund, sales limit to be considered MYPE, etc.).

Who determines its value?

The amount of the UIT is established by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), and is valid for an entire calendar year (from January 1 to December 31).

It is calculated based on a series of macroeconomic elements, mainly inflation, which is why it usually rises every year.

How much did the ITU increase by 2025?

For 2025, the increase will be S/200, similar to the increase for the same amount in 2024 and 2022, but lower than the increase of S/350 that occurred in 2023 and greater than the increases of S/100 in 2021 and 2020.

What is the impact of this increase on the family economy?

The increase in the ITU has various effects on the personal and family finances of Peruvians:

1. Workers on the payroll (formal dependents) will pay less income tax on their salaries, so they will have more money in their pockets.

Examples:
For a gross monthly salary of S/3,000, the annual income tax savings will be S/112.
For a gross monthly salary of S/5,000, the annual income tax savings will be S/256.
For a gross monthly salary of S/10,000, the annual income tax savings will be S/284.

2. Raise the monthly gross salary limit (on the payroll) to avoid paying income tax, which in 2024 is S/2,575 and for 2025 it will be S/2,675.

3. In the case of independent workers who issue receipts for fees, the maximum monthly issuance amount to avoid paying taxes increases from S/3,755 to S/3,901.

4. The limit of personal expenses to request a refund of labor income tax (4th and 5th category), which is 3 UIT, increases from S/15,450 to S/16,050.

5. A greater subsidy will be obtained for the Mivivienda Credit, called “Good Payer Bonus”.

6. Less property tax and alcabala will be paid, since the sections and rates are based on the ITU.

7. The cost of judicial processes and other procedures before the State increases.

8. The value of administrative fines is increased.

What will be the impact for MYPES?

Firstly, the sales limit to be considered a “microenterprise” is 150 UIT, so this value rises from S/772,500 to S/802,500. The same occurs with the “small business”, whose maximum income limit is 1,700 UIT, increasing from S/8,755,000 to S/9,095,000.

Likewise, in the MYPE Tax Regime, in force since 2017, the Income Tax rate is 10% for the first 15 UIT and 29.5% above this amount. Therefore, with the increase in the UIT, companies that are in this regime will save about S/585 in annual taxes.

What other impact could it generate?

The “negative” side of the increase in the UIT is that it will generate a reduction in tax collection, so the government will have fewer resources to be able to carry out works and reactivate the economy. However, this reduction will not be significant.
