Engineer Ramón Chirinos, member of the Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) party, was appointed and sworn in as mayor in charge of the Cabimas municipality for a period of 90 days this Tuesday, December 17, during the 46th ordinary session of the Municipal Council.
The decision to appoint Chirinos came after the temporary absence of Mayor Nabil Maalouf was declared, in accordance with article 87 of the Organic Law of the Municipal Public Power, which establishes that, after more than half of the legal period, the mayor is completely absent. , due to death, resignation, permanent physical or mental incapacity, final court ruling or revocation of the mandate, the Municipal Council will appoint one of its members to replace it.
This proposal was made by councilor Luis Dupuy and supported by seven votes from the opposition bench, made up of councilors Ángel Mata, Rolando Nieves, Marvin Nava, Elisa García, Luis Dupuy, Rafael Reverol and Darío Verde.
For their part, the pro-government councilors Gregorio Sánchez, Elena Calderón, Maritza Palencia and Arelis González voted against, arguing that Chirinos did not meet the conditions to assume the position and because, in their opinion, he is a despotic person and there is alleged corruption in the local council, so they urged that the Municipal Infrastructure management be investigated.
«In the Mayor’s Office there are more prepared people who can take the reins of the city»said Sánchez.
Chirinos, for his part, emphasized that he assumes the position of mayor with great responsibility and commitment, replacing the local president Nabil Maalouf, so he will now continue all the works, both paralyzed and in the pipeline. He did not rule out the possibility of changes of directors.
The session, which was attended by political figures such as Nora Bracho, president of UNT in Zulia, and Otto Piñero, vice president of the Legislative Council of the State of Zulia (Clez), concluded in the midst of a climate of tension. Before Chirinos was sworn in, the councilors of the Homeland Block left the room in protest.
