Ireland’s regulator, acting on behalf of the EU, imposed a fine of 263 million dollars to Meta, the parent company of several social networks, due to a security breach that allowed hackers to access personal data.
The security breach that occurred in 2018 allowed hackers to access personal data, such as the full name, email address, telephone number or even the date of birth or religion, of Facebook users, said the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC).
According to the regulator “this data breach affected around 29 million accounts of Facebook worldwide, of which around three million were based in the EU.
The regulator imposes this fine on behalf of the European Union (EU)since the headquarters of Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is located in Dublin.
