The National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewage (inapa) called this week for a national public tender for an estimated value of 1,125 million pesos, to build a aqueduct on red capePedernales, with a view to the tourist development that the government promotes in that area of the deep south.
The structure is part of the necessary works for the future deployment of large tourism projects announced by the government, in an area that lacks a drinking water supply and sanitation system, and is located in the provinces with the highest rates of country poverty.
“We only know from the locals and data collected by our technicians that the companies that have settled in the area, to develop mineral extraction projects, have created their own supply systems relying on the surrounding waters (underground or surface) for the usual tasks of their functions and the personnel who worked in them, “says the inapa in the Specifications prepared for the tender.
Citing among the companies that settled in the area the company Alcoa Exploración and Cementos Andinos Dominicanos.
In the book that contains the Tourism Development Plan of red capePedernales, indicates that groundwater is presented as the only viable option to meet the project’s water demand.
The advisors who participated in the development of said plan also propose the installation of a desalination plant to supply the drinking water required for development in the medium and future term, as an alternative for environmental sustainability.
The development of the Pedernales border as a tourist destination has been promoted since past governments. The current administration chaired by Luis Abinader has proposed to execute it through the Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) model.
To achieve the above, the Executive Branch issued decree 724 at the end of December 2020, which supports the Pro-Pedernales Trust, a project that will begin by red capelocated 17 minutes east-south of the municipality of Pedernales.
The inapa indicates in the Specifications that, within the development plan of red cape, Pedernales, there are pillars such as environmental conservation, hotel and housing promotion, infrastructure and accessibility, and the well-being of the community of that southern town. The project will also have an international airport.
“The Construction of Aqueduct for the tourist area of red cape it is a vital component that will allow the Pedernales Tourism Development Plan to be developed”, says the inapa to defend the work. “For the purposes, this project has all the studies already prepared; and the designs of all the units that will integrate the Aqueduct from red capein order to offer all stakeholders drinking water in quantity, quality and continuity.
