Appointment of Daniel Mendoza as ambassador to Thailand sparks political commotion

The intention of the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, to appoint Daniel Mendoza as ambassador to Thailanda controversial audiovisual producer known for his misogyny, inclination to sex with minors and pornography, became a political problem for the Government whose chancellor, Luis Gilberto Murillo, will be called to account by Congress.

The representative to the Chamber Julio César Triana, of the opposition Radical Change party, announced this Friday that he presented a motion of censure against the chancellor, an initiative supported by representatives Katherine Miranda and Jennifer Pedraza, among others.

“We have presented a motion of censure against Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo, as responsible for Colombia’s foreign policy,” Triana said in his X account in which he added that Congress “You have to prevent Mr. Daniel Mendoza from being appointed as ambassador to Thailand.”

In line with Triana, representative Miranda said: “I don’t know what is more disgusting, if Mendoza’s trills (publications in

The appointment of Mendoza, author of the series ‘Slaughterer’ against former president Álvaro Uribe (2022-2010) and known for his expressions on social networks with high-caliber vulgarities against women, was defended by Petro on Thursday with a comment at a public event in Barranquilla that increased outrage in the country.

“They are telling me that I cannot name Mr. Mendoza, the one who did the ‘Matarife’, because some photos came out naked with some ladies, the ladies do not say that they went by force but that they liked the moment; how do they expect that a Government libertarian and progressive prohibit love and making love”said the president.

Rain of criticism of Petro

The appointment of Mendoza, without any diplomatic experience or in public office, caused a wave of criticism of Petro since the chosen one is known for the pornographic messages that he published years ago on social networks making apology for child abuse, sexual abuse with drug addiction and rape, among others.

“I categorically reject the trills of Daniel Mendoza Leal. They are misogynistic and endorse sexual violence against women and girls”stated in X the itinerant ambassador for Gender Affairs and Global Feminist Policy of the Foreign Ministry, Arlene Tickner.

Tickner was joined by the ambassador to Austria and head of global drug policy, Laura Gil, who noted: “I have communicated my concerns privately and now I do so publicly: Mr. Mendoza’s trills constitute gender violence.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of International Relations of the Mayor of Bogotá, Sandra Borda, assured that “the grievance is double” with the designation of Mendoza and that “to continue talking about feminist foreign policy is an affront, a nonsense, almost a form of cynicism.”

“President Petro, incredible what your Government has ended up with: a mess of incompetents, corrupt people and abusers of women, and you don’t even care. There is no right,” said House Representative Catherine Juvinao, of the Green Alliance.

They ask Thailand not to grant approval

Congresswoman Jennifer Pedraza, from the Dignity and Commitment party, sent a letter to the honorary consul of Thailand in Colombia, Margarita Pallini, asking that approval not be granted to the questioned Mendoza.

The request is based on the “multiple attacks that Mr. Mendoza has expressed against women through his social networks”said.

Remember that there is also evidence of his inappropriate behavior, which includes “worrying comments about minors, lack of knowledge on sexual education issues and an obvious disregard for women.”

Even a councilor from Bogotá, Diana Marcela Diago, sent a letter to the king of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, in which she asks him “not to grant diplomatic approval” to Mendoza and points out that, “beyond his inexperience, what motivates this request is his public history, characterized by vulgar, misogynistic and offensive expressions towards women.”

Also the Ombudsman, Iris Marín, expressed her vehement rejection of Petro’s decision because “Mr. Mendoza’s actions encourage sexual and gender violence against women and, particularly, against girls.”

“Mr. Mendoza has publicly expressed his satisfaction with sexual relations with girls, sometimes referring to them being in altered states of consciousness, or with adult women who have previously been given drugs.”
Marin said.
