A ravenous fire that consumed three homes this Friday night in the San José Oriental neighborhood was caused by a candle that illuminated an altar to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The fire originated in the home of Natividad del Socorro Castro, 63, which operated as a used clothing and furniture store.
The expert from the distinguished fire department determined that a candle that was in contact with a cloth tablecloth and that, added to the material that was stored in the first home, caused the incident, which began after 10 p.m., so the inhabitants and neighbors were sleeping.
«Preliminarily we can say that three homes and a warehouse were burned. What happens? That here is a flea market, where there are mattresses, there are sofas, and then when you catch fire that, obviously it is difficult for the water to penetrate it, because it is sponge, it is wood, and the houses are old houses, of placement, of everything which is a placing ceiling, and the placing runs fast and runs between half the ceiling and the placing”; Chief Commissioner Ramón Mercedes Landero told local media.

According to Landero, the small platforms, in the neighborhood located in district 4 of the capital, made access to the homes difficult, so long-range hoses had to be used to put out the flames.
The warehouse-house of Marvin Ramón Echegoyen, 66, who lives abroad, was also consumed by flames, as well as a vehicle owned by him.
José Candelario Leiva Madrigal, 77 years old, was also affected but to a lesser extent since his home partially burned. The owner of the home where the fire originated suffered minor burns on her back and was taken to the Doctor Fernando Vélez Paiz hospital.
Although the fire left no human victims, two dogs died that could not be evacuated when the incident began.
