Santo Domingo.- The Permanent Attention Court of the National District issued three months of preventive detention against a citizen Haitian in irregular immigration status, accused of attacking several agents of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) during an operation in the sector Piantini of the capital.
The measure was imposed by Judge Fátima Veloz, who ordered that the accused, identified as Almonord Donal, serve preventive detention at the Najayo Correction and Rehabilitation Center.
Despite being undocumented, two of the four were released on bail upon payment of a financial guarantee of 15 thousand pesos in cash, periodic presentation and prevention of leaving the country, and a third was sent to the Children’s Court. Adolescents, because they are minors.
The case
The incident occurred when an agent was following a foreigner and upon arriving at the construction site where he worked, he entered with the support of a Navy officer, whom the workers dragged into the hole, took away his service weapon, and shot him in the thigh and gave him several blows.
Deportations
Since October to date, 13 immigration agents have been attacked by foreigners and Dominicans who try to prevent the work of Immigration.
The General Directorate of Immigration repatriated 7,027 foreigners without documents justifying their presence in the country, as a result of interdiction operations carried out in the last seven days.
With this figure, more than 76 thousand people have been returned to their nation of origin since last October 2, when the government established a stricter immigration policy against those who do not comply with Dominican immigration regulations.
The arrests were carried out by the immigration control directorate of the DGM, in coordinated work with members of the Army, the Air Force, the Navy of the Dominican Republic, the National Police and the military unit Quiet City Task Force (CIUTRAN).
Of the deportations carried out in the period from December 3 to 9, 3,118 were people repatriated to Haiti through the border points of Elías Piña (1,270), Jimaní (810), Pedernales (535) and Dajabón (503).
The other 3,909 deportees, after being duly processed and purged, were transferred to their nation from the control centers established in Haina (2,193 people), Santiago (1,097) and Dajabón (619).
In these places, procedures are applied that include taking fingerprints, photographs and names. It is also verified whether they are repeat offenders and the times in which they have been taken to their country of origin.
The institution responsible for controlling migratory flows and managing the permanence of foreigners in Dominican territory stated, in a press release, that the interdiction work is carried out respecting the dignity of the detainees, abiding by fundamental values and with all the guarantees of national and international law.
It also indicates that it will continue to comply with the law, its implementing regulations, the mandate of the nation’s Defense and Security Council and the guidelines of President Luis Abinader.
The DGM exposes the importance of safeguarding national security and sovereignty, ensuring that all immigrants, regardless of their origin, are duly documented and registered.
