Congress is ashamed: it could not prevent criminals from running in 2026

He Congress A disastrous legislature has shamefully ended. Stabbing democracy. Turning, as so many times, his back on the country. It was the last day to straighten out, the great opportunity to live up to history, but they ended up becoming accomplices and preferred to put democracy at risk.

Yes, at the most important moment this Friday in the Plenary, the votes were not enough to approve a constitutional reform that guarantees suitability for the exercise of public office and that would prevent those sentenced for terrorism, drug trafficking, rebellion, sedition and mutiny participate in the next elections.

A missed opportunity to block the way for characters like Antauro Humala who, despite serving 17 years in prison for murdering four police officers in the so-called ‘Andahuaylazo’, could now run in the 2026 elections.

As it was a constitutional reform, the vote of 87 congressmen was required, but only 65 legislators showed their support. The 25 parliamentarians who voted against, the 5 who abstained and the several others who were suspiciously absent will have to explain themselves to the country for this complicity. Of the 130 congressmen, 95 participated in this vote.

All present members of the left-wing parties such as Perú Libre (8), Socialista (5) and Cambio Democrático-Voces del Perú (7) voted against.

Meanwhile, legislators such as Esdras Medina (Popular Renewal), Hilda Portero and Silvia Monteza (Popular Action), Héctor Acuña (Honor and Democracy) and the Non-grouped Carlos Zevallos preferred to wash their hands and abstain from a momentous vote to affirm democracy. Let the country judge them.

ORANGE SHORTAGE

What caused surprise was the absenteeism of some congressmen at the time of the vote. Thus, only 7 of the 21 representatives of the Fuerza Popular bench cast their vote for this reform (a third of its members), however, it was surprising that some like Patricia Juárez who marked their attendance at this debate did not participate in the debate. vote.

The vice president of Congress also did not know how to explain her absence at the decisive hour. “I was in and out because I had many meetings; In some of those moments the vote will have been carried out” was the legislator’s explanation when Peru21 approached her after the disastrous result.

When asked about the notable absences of most of his bench colleagues, Juárez only managed to say that his spokesperson César Revilla was the one who had to give the explanation, but he did not attend either.

In further proof of how little the orange bench cared about this vote, Víctor Flores, another of those absent, justified himself by saying that at that time he was at the Ministry of the Interior attending to representation issues.

He explained that some of the members of his bench who were not present at the vote were carrying out parliamentary work outside the Chamber and acknowledged that they never met to decide what the meaning of their vote was going to be.

Others like Fernando Rospigliosi, president of the Constitution Commission, from where this reform was promoted, fell ill hours after having participated in the morning plenary session.

The list of the 14 absent from Fujimorism – a bench that, because it is the majority, has decided on dozens of reforms – is completed by Rosangella Barbarán, Ernesto Bustamante, Nilza Chacón, Raúl Huamán, David Jiménez, Jeny López, Auristela Obando, Vivian Olivos, Magally Santisteban and Héctor Fortune.

THE HOUR OF JUDICIAL POWERl

Irresponsibility and little respect for democracy won again in Congress. Antauro Humala and any other person convicted of serious crimes has the door open in the next elections.

The Judiciary has the opportunity to stop this possibility for the murderer of four police officers if it rejects the appeal that Humala presented against the judicial decision that declared the illegality of the political organization National Alliance of Workers, Farmers, University Students, Reservists and Workers (ANTAURO). , a group that intended to nominate him for the presidency.

Until the closing of this edition, a reconsideration had not been presented in Congress that could at least ensure – with 66 votes – that the reform would be submitted to a referendum.
