He musical thriller “Emilia Pérez” and the historical epic “The Brutalist” topped the list of nominated films on Monday at the Golden Globes 2025, the Hollywood awards that kick off the film awards season leading up to the Oscars.
“Emilia Pérez,” released by Netflix NFLX.O, earned 10 nominations and “The Brutalist,” from independent distributor A24, seven.
Taking home a Globe can help movies in the race to the Academy Awards in March. The last year’s Hollywood strikes altered this year’s release schedule, and awards experts say there is no clear favorite for best picture at the Oscars.
The Globe winners will be chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries and will be announced on January 5 in a ceremony broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+.
“Emilia Pérez” stars Zoe Saldana in the role of a lawyer who helps the leader of a drug cartel (Spanish Karla Sofía Gascón) to fake her death and go from being a man to a woman. Selena Gómez plays the wife of the cartel leader. All three were nominated by Globe voters for acting awards.
“The Brutalist” stars Adrien Brody in the epic story of a Hungarian immigrant who flees the horrors of World War II to rebuild his life in America.
The box office hit “Wicked,” an adaptation of a Broadway play about witches from “The Wizard of Oz,” earned four nominations.
