Left that supports illegal mining, opposes benefits for ZEE

Exports exceeded imports by US$19,894 million

The Plenary of Congress returned to debate yesterday the opinion that proposes the economic framework for the Special Economic Zones (ZEE), which proposes as a tax benefit that the operators or users of these spaces pay a 0% income tax in the first five years.

Look: Current spending grew 30%, but public investment only 13%

For the president of the Parliament’s Economy Commission, Ilich López, this proposal aims to attract the investments that are needed in the country, mainly from businesses that are committed to transformation.

“This is not a law to collect taxes, it is to attract new investments, so that more companies come to Peru,” he said.

However, and as in previous plenary sessions, the left, which at the time supported the expansion of the Comprehensive Registry of Mining Formalization (Reinfo) that promotes illegal mining which threatens life and does not generate income, showed itself in against this proposal.

With arguments such as “we must avoid non-payment”, or “there is a risk that the free zones will be affected”, and without technical proposals, they proposed, among other things, that they start with “rates of 2% or 5 %”.

They even assured that only large companies will benefit, when the initiative really aims at industrialization, taking advantage of the benefits of the port of Chancay that is already in operation and that needs these spaces. The desire to boycott the proposal was so great that they presented a preliminary question for the opinion to return to committee, but it was unsuccessful.

However, the president of the Economy Commission did request an intermission and until the closing of this edition the topic was not raised again.
