The Regional Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM) points to a decrease in pace in four of the 15 locations analyzed. The biggest drops were recorded in Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%). Between September and October, Brazilian industrial production fell 0.2%, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), which released the survey this Friday (13), in Rio.
In the 12 months there was an increase of 3%, with 17 of the 18 locations surveyed showing positive results, while the index accumulated in the year increased by 3.4%, with positive results in all 18 locations analyzed. The national industry is 2.6% above its pre-pandemic level.
According to IBGE, the highlight of October in absolute terms and second place in negative influence was the poor performance of industry in Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%), eliminating part of the 2% increase recorded in the previous month. The tobacco products sectors; chemicals; and cellulose, paper and paper products contributed most to this result.
The research reveals that the biggest negative influence in October was the industry in Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%), which occupied second place in the ranking of biggest declines in industrial production, marking the second consecutive month of decline in production. During this period, there was an accumulated reduction of 3%. The main responsible for the performance of Rio’s industry were the extractive and machinery and equipment sectors.
São Paulo advances 2%
The largest industrial park in the country, São Paulo increased 2% from September to October, the biggest positive influence on the result of the national industry. This is the second positive rate in a row for the São Paulo industry, accumulating a gain of 3.1%.
“The motor vehicle sectors; chemicals; and electrical machines, devices and materials were those that most influenced the dynamics of the state’s industry. This result leaves the São Paulo industry 3.8% above its pre-pandemic level and 19.5% below its highest level, reached in March 2011”, said Bernardo Almeida, regional research analyst.
On the increase side, Pará (7%), Mato Grosso (4.6%), Paraná (3.7%) and Ceará (3.5%) recorded the most significant rates. The analyst recalls that “the industry in Pará is not very diversified, more concentrated in the extractive sector, precisely what boosted the growth of the state’s industry in October. This good performance comes after three months of negative results, a period in which there was a loss of 7.5%”.
