Families affected by the storm on February 15 in Petrópolis, in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro, will have access to a series of benefits and exemptions. According to the city hall, families who lost their homes will receive social rent in the amount of R$ 1,000, with R$ 800 paid by the state government and R$ 200 paid by the municipal authorities.
After 12 days of searching, the death toll in the tragedy reaches 229, with 20 people still missing. The shelters, set up by the city hall in 13 schools in the city, have 875 people.
The people who are in the shelters are being registered in the program automatically. Displaced families must attend Escola Princesa Isabel to register. In partnership with the Regional Council of Real Estate Brokers (Creci-RJ), the city is looking for properties that can be rented to these families.
promises
A bill sent by the city hall to the Petrópolis City Council proposes exemption from IPTU for properties rented by beneficiaries of social rent, as well as exemption from the garbage collection fee. The mayor, Rubens Bomtempo, said he will also ask for exemption from water and electricity fees.
“We are going to ask the water and electricity utilities to make the connections as soon as the rent takes place. And we are also going to request the exemption of the fee for those people who are living there with the social rent. We will strive for concessionaires to make this exemption”.
The city government is also seeking a partnership with the third sector to purchase housing kits for families who have lost everything, with essential furniture and utensils such as a stove, refrigerator, bed and closet.
Another benefit promised by the city hall is the Imperial Card, worth R$ 70 per person, for the purchase of food.
Cleaning
Today (27) the Civil Defense carried out the dismantling of two rocks in Morro da Oficina, in Alto da Serra, to continue the liberation of the area, the most affected by the disaster. The work, preceded by SMS notices to the registered local population, is done with a low-impact technique, using chemical reaction instead of explosives.
So far, more than 41,000 tons of rubble have been removed from the streets of Petrópolis after the rains. Teams work on cleaning, clearing and recovering roads, restoring services, strengthening security and assisting the affected population and rescuing victims.
16 roads blocked by landslides have already been cleared and 432 cars damaged by the rain have been removed from the streets. Electricity supply was normalized for 30 thousand users and water supply reached 96.3% of customers.
