On the night of December 11, a tragedy occurred in the municipality of Girardot, Cundinamarca, when a Christmas tree approximately 30 meters high fell in Bolívar Park, causing the death of a young police assistant.

The victim was identified as Kevin Andrés Navas, 19, who was providing security services in the town square when the fatal incident occurred. According to the hypothesis that is being used so far, the collapse of the decorative structure was caused by the strong winds that hit the region that night.
The young Navas, who was on duty at the time, could not avoid the fall of the heavy structure and was trapped under it.
The distressing moment captured on video
The tragic event was captured by several witnesses who were in the park and who did not hesitate to record the moments after the accident.
In one of the videos circulating on social networks, a person can be heard shouting: “The tree in Bolívar Park has just fallen. “My God, help him.” The images show a group of people trying to lift the tree and rescue the young police officer, while others rush to ask for help.
The young man was quickly transferred to a care center in Girardot, where, unfortunately, he died due to the severity of the injuries caused by the impact of the tree.
For his part, the mayor of Girardot, Salomón Said Arias, asked the company in charge of lighting to provide a detailed report on what happened. Likewise, he requested the removal of the structure and the review of all figures, lights and cables.
The National Police expressed its deep pain for the loss of one of its members and extended its condolences to the family of Kevin Andrés Navas. In addition, authorities have launched an investigation to clarify the exact causes of the incident and determine if there were failures in the installation of the tree or if the fall was completely attributable to weather conditions.
