José Daniel Ferrer ends his hunger strike

SLP, Mexico.- Cuban political prisoner José Daniel Ferrer, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), completed the hunger strike began almost a week ago in the Mar Verde prison, province of Santiago de Cuba, according to what was communicated to Martí News his sister, Ana Belkis Ferrer.

“They gave him a two-hour visit and accepted what was in the bag, the hygiene products and a white sweater,” he told that medium.

In a publication in networks social issues, the sister of the UNPACU leader also communicated the news, specifying that the prison repressors had granted him the full family visit and accepted the bag with food and hygiene products.

“Yesterday, Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Ferrer ended the hunger strike that he had been carrying out for six days, they finally gave him a full family visit and accepted the package of food and hygiene products,” wrote Ana Belkis.

The opposition leader went on hunger strike last Thursday at the Mar Verde prison, where he received a beating on November 18.

According to his sister, the prison authorities argue that, since Ferrer was confined with common prisoners, he had to comply with the same regulations, which meant that he could not even receive bottles of water from his family. This situation would have forced the activist to start the hunger strike.

Ferrer García remained confined in a medical post that they converted into a detachment of two cubicles.

His wife, Nelva Ortega, was able to see him on December 2 and see the injuries from the beating. As reported, the opposition leader continues to be constantly monitored (with cameras and microphones) and sharing space with common prisoners.

The opposition leader also expressed his solidarity with other political prisoners and their families, and sent his “gratitude” and “gratitude” to those who spread the word about their situation. However, he regretted that telephone communication is restricted: “It is 10 minutes that can be cut off at any time,” he said.

The call concluded with Ferrer sending a “very big hug” to his relatives and reiterating that he will not give in: “José Daniel prefers to die than surrender,” he said.

Ferrer has been detained since July 11, 2021 for trying to access the place where the massive protests that day were taking place in their province. A month later, a four-year prison sentence that he had been serving since 2020 in house confinement was revoked.
