Citizens Xiomara Mendoza Cruz, 55 years old, and Genoveva Solano, 60 years old, are the most recent victims of sexist violence in Nicaragua.
These two cases, which occurred on December 8, the day the Immaculate Conception of Mary was celebrated in the country, increased the number of femicides to 80 so far in 2024, according to the count of the organization Catholics for the Right to Decide.
Solano, a renowned former councilor of the Caribbean, was murdered last Sunday morning inside the house she rented in the Constantino Quijano neighborhood, in Kukra Hill, Southern Caribbean of Nicaragua.

The woman’s body had a stab wound to her neck. According to official media, the suspect in the crime was identified as Jerry Puchy Narváez, who broke into the former councilwoman’s home to rob.
The alleged criminal has already been arrested by the National Police.
Femicide in El Tuma-La Dalia
On the same December 8, but in the afternoon, Xiomara Mendoza Cruz, 44 years old, was murdered. The woman was attacked with machetes on a coffee farm in the El Coyolar region, located in the municipality of El Tuma-La Dalia, in Matagalpa.
At the time of the attack, according to state media, the victim was collecting firewood along with a young woman identified as Yessica Mendoza, who was also wounded by machetes and required transfer to a hospital.

They have not yet identified the aggressors. Police continue investigations
The Catholic Voices Observatory for the Right to Decide recorded that between January 1 and December 1, 2024, 59 femicides occurred within Nicaragua and 19 abroad. With the last two cases last weekend, the number of victims of sexist violence within the national territory increased to 61.
The femicides within the national territory occurred in Managua (14), Caribe Norte (13), Caribe Sur (8), Matagalpa (7), Río San Juan (4), Chinandega (4), Nueva Segovia (3), Boaco ( 2), Estelí (2), Granada (2) and Jinotega (2).
