Personería of Medellín will honor the work of Human Rights Defenders

The Sumapaz Foundation records 24 murders of Human Rights Defenders in Antioquia in 2024.

This Tuesday, December 10, the Medellín District Person’s Office will hold a Recognition of Merit for District Human Rights Defenders 2024.

The event is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm at the Plaza de la Libertad Auditorium and seeks to exalt the work of the Human Rights defenders of Medellínwho with their dedication and commitment work tirelessly for the defense, promotion and protection of fundamental rights.

In this edition, the Ombudsman has defined ten categories that highlight various forms of leadership and action in defense of human rights. These categories include: Projects with great impact on population groups: Ethnic minorities, women’s groups, faith-based organizations, older adults, people with disabilities, LGBTIQ+ community, among others.

The second category is focused on youth leaders, boys, girls and adolescents: For their work in the promotion and protection of human rights; The third category will be the Defense of people deprived of liberty: Recognition of those who work for the dignity and rights of this population and their families. The fourth category is Restoration of rights of victims of the armed conflict: In honor of the efforts for reparation and justice.

The fifth category focused on Women leaders defending human rights: In the Science, Technology and Innovation District of Medellín. The work of journalists and social communicators will also be recognized: They promote the defense and protection of human rights.

The seventh category is for Memory and Dignification Processes: For those who stand out in the investigation and presentation of processes related to the victims of the armed conflict. The eighth category; Members of military and police forces: Active or retired who contribute to the promotion of human rights; and the ninth category will recognize the work of the Defenders in rural areas: For their work in communities in the District of Medellín; and the tenth category is for Outstanding Career in Leadership: Honorary recognition to people with a life dedicated to the defense of human rights.

It is worth remembering that, according to data collected by the Sumapaz Foundation, a total of 24 murders of Human Rights Defenders In Antioquia, two cases were registered in the Aburrá Valley.
