South Sudan president fires heads of army, police and central bank governor

The president of South SudanSalva Kiir, announced a remodeling of the country’s security sector with the dismissal of the Army and the Police, while he has also dismissed the governor of the Central Bank, without the reasons for this decision having been revealed for now.

Kiir indicated in a series of decrees that the head of the Army, Santino Deng Wol, has been appointed deputy secretary of the Ministry of Defense, while he has appointed Paul Nang Majok as Deng Wol’s replacement, according to the radio station Radio Tamazuj.

Likewise, he said that the Inspector General of Police, Atem Marol Biar, will leave the position, which will be occupied by Abraham Peter Manyuat, while Johnny Ohisa Damian becomes the new governor of the Central Bank after the dismissal of Garang Alic.

The changes come after the president dismissed in early October the head of the Internal Security Office of the Intelligence services, Akol Koor Kuc, who was out of the country at the time.

The surroundings of Kuc’s home were the scene of a shootout on November 21 after a confrontation between security forces and soldiers assigned to escort him during an attempted arrest, an event attributed by Yuba to “a misunderstanding.”

Kiir himself promulgated on September 22 the amendment to the 2011 Constitution to extend the transition period for another two years opened after the signing of the 2018 peace agreement with the main rebel leader and current first vice president, Riek Machar, a measure criticized by the international community.

Despite the decrease in violence due to the conflict, the African country has registered an increase in inter-community clashes, especially due to the increase in desertification and the displacement of populations, while it has been plunged into a growing economic and humanitarian situation without the authorities being able to consolidate the situation.
