Santo Domingo. – The first spine surgery with the novel, minimally invasive lateral approach technique was performed in Santiago de los Caballeros.
The surgical intervention was performed by a 24-year-old patient who had undergone scoliosis surgery eight years ago and required a second surgery to insert an implant.
For the procedure, the Lateral Approach to the Lumbar Spine for DLIF Fusion (Direct Lateral Interbody Fusion) technique was used with Medtronic implants.
This minimally invasive technique allows access to the spine through a lateral approach, avoiding disassembling all the instruments from your previous surgery, reducing damage to surrounding tissues, reducing recovery time and improving clinical results for patients.
Surgery represents a significant advance in treatments for degenerative conditions
of the lumbar spine in the country.
The first intervention with this technique in the country was led by a team of spine surgeons and other specialties from the Spine Center, with Dr. Piero Perrone, as main surgeon, who was assisted by doctors Iohan Fernández and Ulises Acosta.
Likewise, doctors Jonathan Vargas acted as general surgeon; Edgar Fernández, as vascular surgeon; Graciela Pumarol, in neuromonitoring; and Ivette de Vargas, as anesthesiologist.
“DLIF offers a modern and effective solution to treat various lumbar pathologies, providing patients with an option with lower risks and a faster recovery. We are proud to promote this technology in the country,” explained Dr. Perrone.
The procedure was performed at the Maternal and Child and Specialties Institute, which has the necessary technology for this type of surgery, and had the support of Medtronic, a leading global firm in medical devices.
Dr. Perrone thanked the TechMedical firm, representatives of Medtronic in the country, for the donation of the implant and all the technical support, as well as the trust in him to perform this innovative procedure.
“This surgery sets a new standard in spine care in the country,” noted Dr. Perrone.
With this achievement, the Spine Center reinforces its commitment to medical excellence and access to highly complex procedures, consolidating itself as a leader in the specialty.
The center specialized in treatments for spinal diseases is located in Galeria 360, in the Dominican capital.
