HOLY SUNDAY. – For the first time in the country, spine surgery was performed using the minimally invasive lateral approach technique in Santiago de los Caballeros, marking a milestone in the treatment of lumbar spine conditions in the Dominican Republic.
The intervention was performed on a 24-year-old patient who had undergone surgery for scoliosis eight years ago and required a new procedure for the placement of an implant.
Innovative technique used
The surgery was carried out using the technique Direct Lateral Interbody Fusion (DLIF)which allows access to the spine through a lateral approach.
This method avoids disassembling instruments from previous surgeries, minimizes damage to surrounding tissues, reduces recovery time, and improves clinical outcomes for patients. The implants used were supplied by Medtronica global leader in medical devices.
Multidisciplinary medical team
The historic surgery was performed by a team of specialists from Spine Centerled by doctor Piero Perrone as main surgeon, with the assistance of doctors Iohan Fernandez and Ulises Acosta. Doctors also participated Jonathan Vargas (general surgeon), Edgar Fernandez (vascular surgeon), Graciela Pumarol (neuromonitoring) and Ivette Vargas (anesthesiologist).
An advance in Dominican medicine
“DLIF offers a modern and effective solution to treat various lumbar pathologies, providing patients with an option with lower risks and a faster recovery. We are proud to introduce this technology in the country,” highlighted Dr. Perrone.
