The Minister of the Environment, Juan Carlos Castro, reported today that the Vice Minister of Governance will travel to Moquegua to talk with the residents who have been blocking the Montalvo Bridge, on the South Pan-American Highway, for a week due to the pollution in the Coralaque River.

Castro pointed out on Canal N that he is surprised by the procedure of the protests with a state of water emergency and action plan. “We do not understand what the motivation is or what is behind a motivation like this”he pointed out.
The minister reported that the basin in Coralaque River, located in the General Sánchez Cerro province of the Moquegua region, has been declared in a state of emergency due to water contamination.
“It was the commitment of the Ministry of Energy and Mines to install a liaison office for monitoring in Quinistaquillas, which is already installed”said. There is a commitment to build an acid water treatment plant to address the problem.
However, the residents of Moquegua today gave a truce for vehicle traffic on the Montalvo bridge. Dozens of vehicles were stranded on the road, other drivers looked for alternative routes to reach the city of Ilo (Moquegua) and Tacna.
