Train accident: two freight trains collide in Sancti Spíritus

Accidente ferroviario en Cabaiguán

AREQUIPA, Peru – A collision between two trains was reported this Saturday morning in the vicinity of the so-called Elevado de Guayos, a town in the municipality of Cabaiguán, province of Sancti Spíritus.

A report from the state media Escambray indicates that the collision occurred between a freight train coming from the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM) bound for Camagüey and another originating from Ciego de Ávila in which six wagons with crude oil destined to be processed at the refinery were transported. As a result of the accident, damage was reported to both machinery and to one of the wagons that transported fuel, which caused the product to spill.

Authorities in the province went to the scene of the incident and are investigating its causes. So far no injuries or deaths have been reported.

“Work is underway to restore traffic on this railway line,” the report indicates.

Freight train derailments and accidents are not uncommon in Cubapresumably due to the poor condition and lack of maintenance of the railway tracks. This is the sixth major incident that has occurred this year.

At the end of last September, the derailment of a train with three passenger cars between the Quintana and Jovellanos stations, in Matanzas, left circulation on the Central Line interrupted.

As reported on his networks by the Minister of TransportationEduardo Rodríguez Dávila, after the derailment of the Extra 107 train locomotive 38209 at km 149.2 of the Central Line “no damage to the integrity of the people was reported and everyone was evacuated.”

The incident occurred around 05:15 pm on Friday, September 27, while traveling at km 149.2 of the Central Line.

Likewise, on recent September 12, Extra Train 69, locomotive 312055 derailed and overturned three container plates at kilometer 151between the Quintana and Jovellanos Central Line stations, in the Matanzas province.

The vehicle was headed to the Villa Clara province and had a formation of 16 pieces of equipment, including 14 loaded container plates belonging to the FerroMar SA Company.
