Archbishop Carlos Castillo is named cardinal by Pope Francis

The Archbishop of Lima, Carlos Gustavo Castillo, has been elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis during the ordinary consistory held in the Vatican.

Castillo is one of the 21 prelates from the five continents who received this distinction, highlighting the strong Latin American representation at the event.

With this designation, Castillo joins the select college of cardinals who will participate in the election of the next pontiff. The pope’s decision reflects his commitment to giving visibility to the “peripheries” and regions with greater diversity in the Catholic Church, consolidating his vision of a more inclusive and global institution.
