The intense rains that hit Santa Catarina since the early hours of this Saturday (7) are expected to remain until Monday (9), according to the state’s Civil Defense bulletin released today. In addition to intense rain, the advance of a cold front reinforces the possibility of isolated storms with strong gusts of wind and possible hail.
The volumes of rain recorded between Friday (6) and the early hours of today have already caused flooding and flash floods in several regions of the state. In the municipality of Bom Retiro, in Serra Catarinense, significant damage was recorded, with 50 homes affected and around 200 people impacted by the floods. Civil Defense reported that there is no record of victims.
The municipality of Joinville also faced floods, and many neighborhoods were flooded. In the last 12 hours, the recorded volume reached 120 millimeters (mm) across the region.
“Other municipalities, such as Xanxerê and Dionísio Cerqueira, also faced occasional flooding. The meteorological instability is caused by a semi-stationary cold front, which maintains the forecast of intense rains until Monday (9), with high risks of landslides and flooding in several areas”, informed the Civil Defense.
Throughout Saturday, the rain occurs persistently and comprehensively, especially between the regions of Grande Oeste, Vale do Itajaí, Planalto Norte and Litoral Norte. In these regions, the highest accumulated volumes of rain are expected.
“The risk is high for events associated with flooding, flash floods and possible landslides in these regions. In the southern portion of the state, storms with occasionally intense rain are also expected, but the accumulations should be lower compared to those in other regions, bringing a moderate risk of flooding and occasional flash floods”, added the Civil Defense.
On Sunday (8) and Monday (9), cloudy and rainy weather remains in a large part of the state, with the risk of meteorological events remaining moderate to high, especially in areas on the border with Paraná. In this region, rain tends to be more voluminous, especially in the Greater West, Plateaus, Vale do Itajaí and North Coast.
“At the end of the event, in the most affected areas, volumes between 200mm and 250mm are expected, on average. In view of this, the risk of events associated with heavy rain, with possible hydrological and geological impacts, is considered high”, informed the agency.
In the area between the South Coast and Greater Florianópolis, rain will also remain frequent. Slightly smaller volumes are expected, varying between 60 and 80 mm with occasional volumes of around 100 mm. In these areas, the risk is moderate for events associated with intense and voluminous rain, such as flooding and flash floods.
On Monday, the rain partially decreases, mainly in areas close to Rio Grande do Sul. In other regions, the stationary system that will be positioned over Paraná, added to the influence of a low pressure area, still maintains greater coverage of clouds and conditions for occasionally intense rain.
“The risk remains moderate to high for events associated with flooding, flash floods and landslides. At dawn, temperatures vary between 10°C in the Serra and 17°C in the West and North Coast. In the afternoon, temperatures rise little, varying between 13°C and 21°C across the state. The sea is not very rough with waves from the south/southeast between 1.5m and 2m. Winds from the southeast/east vary between 30 and 50 km/h”, warns the Civil Defense.
Instability should decrease between Tuesday (10) and Wednesday (11), but, according to the bulletin, the transport of moisture from the sea to the coast leaves the weather overcast and rainy, especially in coastal areas and nearby regions.
