Peru sinks into the deepest crisis

The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) announced this Friday that it has dismissed the general director, Juan Carlos Oblitasin the midst of a crisis in the team’s results, last in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and a month after the arrest of its president, Agustín Lozano, for an alleged case of corruption.

“It has been decided to dismiss Juan Carlos Oblitas as general director of football of the FPF. The Federation thanks Juan Carlos for the commitment shown in the management that he developed professionally and that led to the sporting successes that the country and our institution recognized,” reads a statement from the federation. In this regard, he announced that, “in the coming days” the FPF will appoint a replacement for Oblitas.

The FPF also announced that, in accordance with the decision made today by its board of directors, it will review the calendar and format of the Peruvian league to “guarantee its best functioning.” Finally, he reported that he has delegated “to the General Secretariat the formation of an advisory committee” whose objective will be “to provide support and accompaniment in its institutional restructuring and renewal.”

A historic results crisis

The Peruvian team has 7 points in 12 games, the result of one victory, four draws and seven losses, a streak made worse by having been able to score only three goals. In parallel, Lozano was preliminarily detained on November 7 as part of an investigation that links him to a network dedicated to the irregular use of the institution’s resources in illicit acts, called ‘Los Galacticos’.

Initially, the Prosecutor’s Office requested 36 months of preventive detention for him for the alleged commission of corruption crimes. Subsequently, the Public Ministry withdrew the charges of being part of a criminal network, in compliance with a new law that forced the modification of the accusation against the leader, who will now be in charge of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Money Laundering.

The provincial prosecutor against organized crime Juan Orihuela reported that the legislative reform has limited the ability of the Public Ministry to investigate various crimes within the framework of the Organized Crime Law. He pointed out that, initially, an alleged illicit network linked to the administration of the FPF had been considered, but the law enacted last October prevents it from including fraud in the administration of legal entities and private corruption, which receive maximum sentences of up to 5 years in prison.
