The first days of December have revealed an alarming situation in Quindío, related to the impact on wildlife.
As reported by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Quindío (CRQ)more than 30 animals have apparently died due to the use of gunpowder during the dawn festivities. This figure has generated great concern among environmental authorities.

According to Juan Esteban Cortés, director of the CRQ, the necropsies carried out on the dead animals, which include 37 birds and 3 mammalsthey did not provide a cause of death.
However, the hypothesis most likely that experts handle is that the animals would have died due to the daze and the severe stress caused by explosives.
“We are carrying out the necropsy of some animals, which are 37 birds and 3 mammals, in which we have not initially found a specific cause of death, so the information leads us to conclude that it is due to the stunning generated by the gunpowder,” Cortés explained in an interview for Caracol News.

The lethal damage of gunpowder to animals
The CRQ experts recalled that the damage caused by fireworks to wildlife is lethal. Loud sounds and explosions could affect the animals’ nervous system, causing everything from stress to death.
On the other hand, Quindío authorities have also reported another alarming situation: illegal wildlife trafficking. In the first two days of December, the Autonomous Corporation of Quindío unwary three birds and two mammals that were being transported illegally. Among them was a howler monkey that had been brought from the Colombian Caribbean and to Nariño.
