As part of its operations against clandestine logging, the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa) reported yesterday that this weekend alone it seized 185.8 cubic meters of wood, 8.9 cubic meters of forest land, 24 tons of charcoal, 10 vehicles and four sawing tools.
The agency detailed that between the early hours of November 29 and over the course of the weekend, its inspectors, in coordination with security and environmental authorities from 16 states, installed 28 highway checkpoints simultaneously in areas considered critical in the forestry area of the entities, among which Mexico City, the state of Mexico, Morelos, Durango and Puebla stand out.
In addition to the seized forest raw materials, he explained that it was possible to detect other crimes related to the use of forests, including the laundering of illegal wood with official documents, the use of the same papers to cover more than one trip or the reporting of species other than those transported, among others.
He indicated that 589 personnel from different institutions participated in the maneuvers, including inspectors from the central offices and those representing Profepa in the states, personnel from the Secretariats of National Defense and the Navy, the National Guard, security Secretariats and security authorities. state environments.
The attorney general’s office added that the operation is part of the actions it promotes within the framework of the national strategy against illegal logging, which has the objective of monitoring different stages of the forest production chain in order to identify and stop various environmental crimes.
