"The judicial reform will allow a more agile and less impunity system": president of the Supreme Court

The reform that was approved in the Senate with majority support aims to have more agile justice.

The president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Gerson Chaverra, expressed his confidence in the judicial reform approved in the Senate plenary of the Republic this Tuesday, December 3rd.

According to Chaverra, the initiative, which reforms Law 906 of 2004, will contribute to improving the criminal justice system in Colombia, guaranteeing a faster and more effective response to criminal proceedings.

The reform project, which was worked on jointly by the Supreme Court of Justice, the Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Justice, includes 12 articles that seek tocongest the adversarial criminal system and reduce levels of impunity

Chaverra highlighted that this reform will allow shorter completion of processes, which will benefit all parties involved, speeding up resolutions and reducing waiting time for citizens.

“With the reform approved, we are sure that it will contribute significantly to decongesting the penal system, and reduce the high rates of impunity that we have observed until now,” commented the president of the Supreme Court. Despite not being able to quantify the exact impact on impunity, Chaverra assured that the Reform will strengthen negotiated justice, a fundamental pillar of the adversarial criminal system, and will facilitate the resolution of cases more efficiently.

In his speech, the magistrate specified that the essence of the accusatory criminal system lies in the ability to negotiate and in the use of tools such as the abbreviated ending of the processes.

Furthermore, these figures will allow the defendants and victims reach agreements before cases go to trial, thus reducing the time and resources invested in each case.

The president of the Supreme Court pointed out that, with this legal modification, the Colombian criminal procedural system will become more effective, allowing judicial authorities to respond more quickly to citizens’ demands for justice.

He concluded by highlighting that this is a key step to guarantee a more efficient justice and less permeated by impunity in Colombia.
