The new Minister of Energy and Mines, Jorge Montero Cornejoannounced that it will work in coordination with the Energy and Mines Commission of the Congress of the Republic to achieve, within six months, that the country has an agreed Law on Small Mining and Artisanal Mining (MAPE).
“We are going to work not only with the Energy and Mines Commission, but also with small-scale mining unions and with private sector unions, with whom we must also reach a consensus. This has to be a job for all strata and actors in the mining sector,” said the head of MINEM, quoted by RPP.
In his presentation before officials and servants of his office, Montero highlighted the importance of working with the Regional Governments, under an agenda with monitoring and control, in order to strengthen the process of formalizing small-scale mining.
Along these lines, he announced that he will appear before the Congress of the Republic to support the legislative initiative on small and artisanal mining, and that he has the objective of advancing in the development of the regulations necessary for its implementation.
ABOUT PETROPERU
Regarding the state-owned Petroperú, he announced that he will coordinate directly and frequently with the new board of directors in order to be aware of the progress made by the company: “I am going to request weekly meetings with the current board of directors, to monitor their quality indicators. That will be the level of monitoring, I want to see the weekly reports.”
The minister said that he defends the need for a renewed and strong Petroperú: “The State has the right to put its hand in strategic issues, not everything can be outsourced or privatized, but we also need a State that promotes investment.”
