Uruguay will host the LXV Mercosur Summit
On December 5 and 6, Uruguay will host the LXV Mercosur Summit in Montevideo. In addition to the Uruguayan president, Luis Lacalle Pou, the heads of state of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay will attend. Among the topics of discussion, the proposal to make the bloc more flexible, the negotiations with the European Union to reach a free trade agreement and the entry of Panama as an associated state stand out.
The summit will include the participation of the presidents of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou; Argentina, Javier Milei; Brazil, Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, and Paraguay, Santiago Peña. The participation of the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, is also expected. On the occasion, Uruguay will transfer the temporary presidency of the bloc to the Argentine Republic.
Minister Paganini explained that the summit will discuss how to improve the bloc’s external agenda. “We have a series of relevant discussions on the table that have to do with positioning the bloc, so that it is a better exit platform to the world,” he said.
Among them, he highlighted the proposal for flexibility, the incorporation of Panama as an associated State and the negotiations to reach a free trade agreement with the European Union. On this point, he reported that negotiations are being carried out to agree on the text of the agreement. “You can reach an agreement on the text, not the signing of the treaty, which requires a series of major processes,” he clarified.
“It would be historic, because we have been seeking this important agreement for 25 years, which brings together an important group of world economies,” he said. Likewise, he assured that reaching a treaty between two democratic regions would allow for strengthening the values associated with this regime and its geopolitical presence.
In another order, the leader explained that, during the temporary presidency of Uruguay, progress was made in the review of obstacles to facilitate the transit of people and goods between the countries. In this period, actions were carried out, such as progress in the integrated areas of border control, he exemplified.
