In a little more than three months since the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) began its second term, the opposition has not given the Government any respite with accusations of corruption, inefficiency, mismanagement of the economy, increase in public debt (loans ) and other accusations.

President Luis Abinader, who was re-elected with 57%, assumed his mandate (2024-2028) on August 16, submitting a constitutional and a fiscal reform, the latter generating great social rejection that forced his withdrawal from the National Congress.

Last Monday the head of state stated that the opposition has not granted any truce to let him work in the first 100 days of his administration.

“Here there has been a direct attack on the Government from day one and there has not been such a honeymoon,” Abinader said.

Leonel Fernandez

The president of the Force of the People Leonel Fernández He has been one of the most acidic in his criticisms against the authorities. In September he denounced that under the contract of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) with the company Transcore Latam, an espionage and corruption scheme was set up, which he defined as a scandal.

When in October the Government announced the scope of the tax reform, with which it hoped to raise some RD$125 billion, Fernández immediately described it as a “fiscal bombshell, proposing that the collection would be contributed by the poorest and the middle class.” and not those who can the most.

Furthermore, Fernández has expressed that the authorities have been inefficient in the exercise of power, having failed in the fight against corruption, after accusing them of manipulating data related to the performance of the Dominican Republic’s economy.

Danilo Medina

Former President Danilo Medina has not been left behind to rant at the Government. About 10 days ago he pointed out that the Government led by the PRM has taken the country backwards.

“We are living the consequences of having a government that governs by seeing statistical figures on its screens, without thinking about what is behind them,” said Medina during the conclusion of the X Reinaldo Parez Pérez Congress, an event where the Dominican Liberation Party ( PLD) selected its authorities.

These criticisms found a response in Luis Abinader himself, who expressed that Medina’s statements were normal and that he was dealing with them to try to relaunch the purple party, founded in 1973.

Carlos Pena

Meanwhile, the former presidential candidate of the Generation of Servers Party, Carlos Peña, has frequently rejected the Government’s economic policy, under the understanding that it is governed for the minority.

When the tax reform was submitted to the National Congress, Peña called a vigil at the head of that body to oppose the measure, considering that more money could be obtained without the need for more taxes and gave an example: reducing payroll and alleged corruption. administrative.

Entrepreneurs

Last week, the former vice president of the AIRD, Circe Almánzar, expressed concern about what she described as excessive spending and institutional weakness in the public sector. For his part, the former Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Isa Conde, considers that the government makes promises that are “impossible to keep.”
