MIAMI, United States. – The Greco-Roman wrestler and five-time Olympic champion Mijaín López and the wrestler Yusneylis Guzmán, runner-up in the Paris 2024 Olympic Gameswere selected as the Best Athletes of Cuba in 2024. The decision It was announced this Monday in Havanaafter counting votes from a survey carried out among sports journalists from national media.
The press conference took place in the Ciudad Deportiva assembly hall, where the names of the most outstanding athletes of the year were revealed. The disciplines of wrestling and volleyball were recognized as the most outstanding individual and collective sports, respectively.
In the non-individual event category, canoeists Yarisleidis Cirilo Duboy and Yisnoly Franchesca López were awarded for their performance in international competitions. Pitcher Liván Moinelo was named the most outstanding contract athlete, while Erick Hernández received recognition in special sports for his achievements in ball control.
The awards ceremony is scheduled for December 13 at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum. During the event, special recognition will also be given to the champion team of the II Blind Baseball World Cup.
Among the most notable athletes of the year are:
- Erislandy Alvarez (Boxing): Gold medalist at the Paris Olympic Games and winner of two professional fights.
- Luis Alberto Orta (Greco-Roman Wrestling): Bronze medalist in Paris 2024.
- Arlen Lopez (Boxing): Olympic bronze and IBA professional world champion.
- Milaymis Marin (Wrestling): Bronze medal in the Olympic Games.
- Gabriel Rosillo (Greco-Roman Wrestling): Bronze in Paris 2024.
- Rafael Alba (Taekwondo): Olympic bronze and leader of the world and Olympic rankings.
- Leyanis Perez (Athletics): Fifth place in Paris 2024 and winner of the Diamond League.
The national baseball team was selected as the most outstanding of the year, after being crowned world and Pan American champions, and leading the WBSC ranking. In team sports, volleyball won titles in various international competitions, both indoor and beach.
