AREQUIPA, Peru – The shortage of JET-A1 aviation fuel will affect the international airports of Havana and Varadero between December 1 and 8, according to aviation authorities on the Island.
José Ramón Hernández Agüero, Director of Operations of the Cuban Aviation Company SA (ECASA), reported the problem in a letter to the Institute of Civil Aeronautics of Cuba (IACC).
“Taking into account the low coverage of JET-A1 fuel at our airports, the publication of NOTAM is requested informing the non-availability of JET-A1 fuel at the airports of the ECASA network as of Sunday, December 1, 2024 at 00 :01LT (0501UTC) until further notice,” reads the letter addressed to Orlando Nevot González, director of air navigation at the IACC.
The energy crisis on the Island goes further of the blackouts and public transportation, also affecting aviation. As a result of the lack of JET-A1 fuel, several airlines have issued alerts, urging tourists to stay informed for flight updates.
In this regard, the Russian Embassy in Havana reported on Facebook to visitors from that country who may be affected.
“In relation to the notice from the Cuban authorities about the shortage of air fuel at the Havana and Varadero airports from December 1 to 8, we urge Russian tourists who are already on the Island to remain in constant contact with the operator. tourism,” the statement says.
Although limited routes have not been reported so far, the situation could result in delays and even cancellations of some flights.
According to information provided by the Spanish Repsolan energy and petrochemical multinational, JET-A1 fuel is a fuel used in modern aircraft. It is known for achieving a large amount of energy with a minimum fuel load, since its calorific value provides maximum power to the aircraft.
