S/22,000 million will stop investing

Projects worth US$15.8 billion will be awarded

In 2024 only 68% of the budget allocated for public investmentsmeaning that approximately S/22,000 million will not be disbursed, said the director of the Peruvian Chamber of Construction (Capeco), Guido Valdivia.

“This not only limits the positive impact of the works in the short term, but also puts the sustainability of the sector’s growth in the medium term at risk,” he said, noting that 56.7% has been disbursed so far.

Likewise, he stated that if it is decided to launch the Ministry of Infrastructure, the implementation process would also affect the efficiency of state works. Other factors that would mean a slowdown in disbursement, as explained, is the need to reduce the fiscal deficit and the implementation of the new procurement law.

Regarding private investment, the union representative pointed out that mining continues to face structural challenges that limit its development potential. For this reason, he indicated that a more strategic approach is needed to unblock projects like Tía María.

Something that is also needed, according to Guido Valdivia, is to strengthen the Works for Taxes (OxI) mechanism, “which allows financing development projects with private participation, promoting decentralization and improvement of public services, especially in mining regions.”

RISE SECTOR

On the other hand, the director of Capeco revealed that in October the construction sector would have grown 7.5%, which would be its best performance so far this year. With this result, the accumulated advance in 10 months would be 4.5%.

Home sales in Metropolitan Lima, for their part, also show a favorable result with a growth of 43.7% in the third quarter. This increase is due to the greater dynamism of the Lima Moderna and Lima Top districts.

However, he warned that social housing projects face great challenges such as the resistance of some municipalities to the implementation of this type of property.
