Every time the end of the year approaches, a debate begins in the Permanent Commission for Coordination of Salary and Labor Policies between representatives of the Government, the labor confederations and the business unions to define what the minimum wage will be next year.
Regarding the possible figure for the coming year, the Minister of Finance, Ricardo Bonilla, said that inflation in Colombia was in single digits and that the minimum wage had to be in accordance with the figure. The Government proposes a 6.2 percentwhich would leave the minimum wage at 1,380,600 pesos. For businessmen, this increase would have to be in a 6%, so in that case it would remain 1,378,000 pesos.
Experts on the subject assure that the increase could reach up to 100,000 pesosthat is, the increase could be 7.7%; However, we will have to wait for the figure to be defined in the coming weeks.
Between December 12 and 15, the negotiation tables will begin. If there is no agreement between the parties, the Government will set the increase by decree no later than December 30.
Although the Government insists that inflation in Colombia has gone down, many Colombians continue to experience a loss of purchasing power when they shop in supermarkets and chain stores, otherwise when they go to food markets where food is naturally sold at a lower price.
