The Minister of Development and Social Inclusion, Julio Demartini, announced that the school feeding program Qali Warma will be replaced gradually and orderly by a new one called Wasi Mikuna.
“We have made a decision because the model as it is is no longer sufficient,” he said.
The head of Midis pointed out that Wasi Mikuna means “homemade food” in Quechua. This system will start in 2025: “We are going to improve the good things about Qali Warma.”
Demartini reported that it will be a “community school feeding program.” He also stated that parents will have participation in school feeding.
“We have decided to take a historic step towards a new school feeding model and, with the valuable assistance of the World Food Programme, we are creating, through a supreme decree, the Wasi Mikuna program,” highlighted the head of Midis.
In that sense, he guaranteed that parents, through Apafas, will be members of the board of directors of the new program, which will allow greater oversight.
He added that Wasi Mikuna will promote the use of fresh products from family farming, and will have the technical support of the World Food Program, ensuring the highest international standards of quality and sustainability.
On the other hand, Demartini pointed out that in the remainder of the year, the supervision and inspection actions of the Qali Warma program are being reinforced, with simultaneous operations throughout the country, working together with MIDIS technical teams, territorial heads of the program and parents. and mothers of the APAFAs.
“I asked Ripalda to resign”
The minister revealed that he asked Pedro Ripalda, former director of the Qali Warma program, to resign. However, he assured that he thanked him “for his effort”: “This is a process that could no longer be carried out by the staff who were leading the Qali Warma process.”
Demartini announced that “an international external control and supervision body will be hired, where it will give us a certification of each of the processes.”
