The now former Minister of Energy and Mines, Romulo Muchohe spoke on his LinkedIn account after presenting his resignation from the position. Much expressed his gratitude to President Dina Boluarte for the trust placed in him since his appointment in February 2024. “It has been an honor to lead this energy mining sector, key to the development of the country,” said the former official.

Much’s departure occurs after being censured by the Plenary of the Congress and in the midst of constant criticism from various political and social sectors, who questioned its policies regarding artisanal and small-scale mining, including the delivery of the ‘Mape Law’. However, the former minister highlighted in his message having worked to “organize and regulate small and artisanal mining”, traditionally conflictive areas in the country.
In his publication, Much stated that the initiatives promoted by his portfolio helped regain the country’s confidence as a safe and attractive destination for small and large national and international investments. “We reaffirm Peru as an attractive and safe destination for mining, energy and hydrocarbon investment,” he expressed in his statement.
The former minister expressed his satisfaction for having contributed to laying the foundations for the country’s development. “I take away the satisfaction of having contributed to Peru continuing to be a country of great opportunities,” he said, thus reaffirming his commitment to continue working for the well-being of the country from other platforms.
Rómulo Much thus closes a chapter marked by achievements in investment and regulation, but also by conflicts. His resignation leaves open the question of who will assume leadership of the Ministry of Energy and Mines in a context of significant challenges for the Peruvian extractive sector.
