Orsi travels to Brazil to address Mercosur issues and bilateral agenda with Lula

The meeting, initially scheduled for this Thursday, was rescheduled for noon on Friday.

In a press conference held on Thursday, Orsi explained that Mercosur and bilateral issues will be the central axes of the conversation with Lula. Asked about the specific issues to be discussed, he noted: “I believe that the Mercosur issue will always be there, and some proposals or some pending issues that President Lacalle himself has already transmitted to me, which are on track, but it is good that Brazil can accelerate, because it fundamentally arose from the will of President Lula, on issues fundamentally of navigability, ports and other things that are going to appear.”

Furthermore, he highlighted that these discussions go beyond the current governments and respond to the needs of the country: “The relationship with Brazil has been very good in recent years and the need of the country, not so much the current president or myself, but “The country needs to energize some decisions that have already been made.”

Orsi also clarified his position regarding the foreign policy of his future government: “Foreign policy is Uruguayan, and yes or yes it has to be in harmony with the region, and there we are talking about Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. It is not that you align yourself with the politics of others, but we have to play the best game for Uruguay, that speaks of intelligent interdependence.”

The meeting with Lula will also include a conversation with the Uruguayan ambassador in Brazil and technical meetings with Brazilian specialists in strategic areas.
