The National Migration Service (Sermig) of Chile reported this Friday the expulsion of 40 foreigners who committed crimes to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, bringing the total number of deportations to 1,016 during 2024.
The expelled people committed crimes such as “robbery with intimidation, robbery with violence, illegal possession of firearms, illicit drug trafficking, among other serious crimes that represent a threat to security and also for violations of immigration regulations, such as entry through steps not enabled,” explained Sermig.
The director of the service, Luis Eduardo Thayer, stated that to date “the highest figure in the last six years” was reached, highlighting the coordinated work with the Investigative Police (PDI) to carry out the expulsions.
For his part, the prefect inspector and national head of Migration and International Police of the PDI, Christian Sáez, assured that through the National Inspection Plan on public roads it has been possible to find violators of the law in the country.
“The objective of this Plan is to detect foreigners who are residing in Chile irregularly, committing crimes, or to locate those people who have decrees or expulsion resolutions in force,” he commented.
The expulsions occur in the midst of a serious security crisis that has affected the country since 2021 and has been escalating in recent times.
Since coming to power in March 2022, President Gabriel Boric has toughened his speech against foreigners who commit crimes in Chile and has asked for the collaboration of the countries of origin in the region to confront this scenario.
In February 2023, Chile began a military deployment for 90 days at critical points on the border with Peru and Bolivia with a view to increasing control of the irregular entry of migrants in the north of the country.
