Who was Silvia Pinal?

Silvia Pinal, born on September 12, 1931 in Guaymas, Sonora, was one of the most emblematic figures of Mexican cinema, television and theater. Her career began at age 18 with the films Bamba and Laura’s Sin, quickly establishing herself as one of the most prominent actresses of her generation.

In 1952, he received his first Ariel from the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences for Best Co-Acting for the film A Corner Near the Sky. Later, he won two other Ariels: in 1957 for Locura pasional and in 1958 for La dulce enemiga.

International consecration with Buñuel

His most famous film, Viridiana (1961), directed by the legendary filmmaker Luis Buñuel and co-produced by her then husband Gustavo Alatriste, it is considered one of the best in Spanish cinema. The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and obtained nearly 150 international awards, catapulting Pinal to global recognition.

Along with Buñuel, he also starred in The Exterminating Angel (1962) and Simón del Desierto (1965), the latter cut short due to financial problems.

Silvia Pinal also worked with renowned international filmmakers such as José María Forqué (Maribel and the Strange Family, Goodbye, Mimí Pompom), Samuel Fuller (Shark, Shark’s Nest) and Giorgio Bianchi (Uomini e gentiluomini, Pan, amor y Silvia). Her filmography exceeds 80 films, establishing her as one of the most prolific actresses of her time.

Pioneer in musical theater and television icon

Silvia Pinal also entered politics in the early 90s. She was the wife of Tulio Hernández, governor of Tlaxcala from 1981 to 1987, making the actress first lady of the state. She also joined the PRI, a party with which in 1991 she was a federal deputy, senator for the period 1997-2000 and member of the Assembly of the Federal District.

Recent years

In recent years she had sporadic participation in film, theater and television, in addition to remaining active as a union leader and activist in the union of Mexican actors and performers.

During the pandemic, the actress fell ill with Covid-19 at the end of December 2021.

A year later she was honored by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, through the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (Inbal) and the National Cineteca, for her artistic and cultural legacy to Mexico.

He married four times and had four children: Alejandra Guzmán, Viridiana Alatriste, Silvia Pasquel and Luis Enrique Guzmán.
