Who is Armando Benedetti?
Armando Benedetti has been a key figure in Colombian politics, especially in Gustavo Petro’s presidential campaign in 2022, being one of Petro’s greatest supporters on his path to the presidency. The politician was also appointed as Colombia’s first ambassador to Venezuela, but his mandate ended amid a scandal related to illegal wiretapping and accusations of irregularities in Petro’s electoral campaign.
Recently, Benedetti was also involved in another scandal, this time involving sexist violence.
In July 2024, his wife, Adelina Guerrero, reported him for physical attacks during a trip to Madrid, which led the Colombian Foreign Ministry to open disciplinary proceedings against him.
Benedetti indicated that he will begin his activities this Tuesday and that his office will be located next to those of President Petro and Sarabia, with whom he has had important differences.
“I arrive as a political advisor to the President of the Republic, thanks to the friendship and closeness that I have with him,” he stressed in statements to the media, and pointed out that, among his tasks – of which he does not yet know if he will perform them as a contractor or as a public official—will be strengthening ties with the Colombian Congress.
