President-elect Yamandú Orsi has decided to suspend his agenda scheduled for this Tuesday and work from his residence in Salinas. Reports from his surroundings released to the press indicate that during this time, Orsi has dedicated himself to answering calls, responding to messages and “He talked to a lot of people”which reinforces his focus on establishing effective communication in these first days of his mandate.
On Wednesday, Orsi will officially begin the government transition through a meeting with the current president, Luis Lacalle Pou. In this first instance, only one name has been confirmed for the cabinet in formation, which has begun to generate concern within some sectors of the Frente Amplio (FA).
According to publications in the newspaper El País, the announcements of the future ministers of the Interior, Foreign Affairs and Defense are expected to accelerate, which are key to marking two important areas of the future government: relations with the world and national security. . For example, Orsi’s participation in the next Mercosur summit, in Montevideo, highlights the urgency of defining the future chancellor.
With almost five years out of power, the Frente Amplio has begun to internally discuss various aspects of how the relationship between the party and the Executive Branch should be carried out. This process is a critical aspect that generated tensions in previous governments.
Key components in the transition
To address this issue, a document prepared in 2004 that addressed the dynamics between the leftist party, the government and social organizations will be reviewed. This text proposed maintaining a balance between relative autonomy and constant communication, in addition to responsibility for the decisions made. One of the most prominent principles is “the impossibility of governing in a permanent assembly.”
Fernando Pereira, president of the FA, recently stated that the party must “be able to understand social demands and transmit them to the government.” This approach seeks to establish fluid communication without falling into the risk of the FA trying to take control of the cabinet or government decisions.
The links that will be sought to facilitate this effective interaction will be the political secretary of the FA, Daniel Mariño, and the future secretary of the Presidency, who appears to be Senator Alejandro Sánchez. The latter is seen as an ideal candidate for the position, given his “articulation capacity” shown in Parliament in the past.
Orsi is willing to contact various sectors of the Frente Amplio to receive “suggestions” about his cabinet. Apart from Gabriel Oddone in Economics and Finance, no further names have been confirmed at the moment. The final responsibility for the decisions remains in the hands of Orsi, who seeks to avoid imbalances in the Senate.
