Álvaro Uribe at CADE: "If investor confidence is not built, there will be no social cohesion"

Alvaro Uribe CADE

This afternoon, it was inaugurated CADE Executives 2024 in the city of Arequipa. Among the first speakers was the former president of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe, who spoke about the actions his government carried out in economic matters and to reduce violence rates. In addition, he analyzed the current panorama of Latin America.

“What comes first, social solutions or security? Both being important, without security it is impossible to achieve social solutions. This is a controversial issue, but I leave it to you as a reflection. In 2002, four million Colombians left the country. With the current government, the figure is close to two million. We set out to build trust in Colombia, we created two circles: the vicious one, from which we had to escape, and the virtuous one, which we had to reach,” he began his speech.

He stated that although he does not see his country becoming a wonder, “progress was made and a great effort was made to build a doctrine, create more security and investment, which should lead us to have less poverty.”

He assured that “if investor confidence is not built, social cohesion will not be built.” “If we move forward with private investment and not with social policy, private investment is delegitimized.”

Likewise, the former president considered that “it is important to define private entrepreneurship. Either we spend the state’s money on politicking, or we reach full health insurance coverage.”

THE PERUVIAN ECONOMY HIGHLIGHTED

At another time, Uribe highlighted that Peru is an example of economic stability, despite its political difficulties.

“I believe that Peru is an example for us of economic stability. It will have ups and downs, but it is an example. I wish Peru, from the bottom of my heart, that the economy would be maintained and that politics could be softened by taking it to the calm sea of San Martin “

After his speech, former Foreign Minister José García Belaunde asked him how he saw the Trump-Latin America relationship and if there were reasons to worry, to which he responded that there is hope in the magnate’s government.

“First, in the mentalities that we defend, freedom, democracy, private entrepreneurship, there is hope in the Trump government, but the campaign speech was not explicit because he only said that Venezuela and El Salvador sent criminals to him. So, there is an expectation waiting for what will happen and what the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, will do, and if his speech can be translated into execution,” he noted.
