A private plane with six people on board crashed yesterday Monday in the hills surrounding the capital city of San José, leaving five dead and one survivor in critical condition, the Costa Rican Red Cross reported.
Emergency teams arrived at the scene of the accident after several hours trying to access the steep forested slopes where the small plane, a Cessna 206 model, which was traveling from Tortuguero, on the northern coast of the Caribbean, towards the capital, crashed.
The pilot, the co-pilot and four passengers who were part of a local tourism company were traveling on the aircraft, local media reported.

The plane was destined for the local Tobías Bolaños airport, in the east of the Costa Rican capital.
However, before his arrival the pilot asked to go to the nearby Juan Santamaría international airport due to poor weather conditions, at which point the aircraft’s signal was lost.
The authorities have not yet made an official report on the causes of the incident.
Another small plane that reported the accident while flying over the area indicated the existence of fog banks in the area, known as Pico Blanco.
