President Nicolás Maduro reiterated his support for the upcoming elections of justices of the peace to be held on December 15, as part of a process that he described as the cancellation of “a historic debt” with the National Constitution.
The president explained that this is the first election of judges with a popular vocation, in which 15,891 main judges will be voted for, the same number for substitute judges, there will be a total of 31,782 judges.
“This is a constitutional debt, that Sunday will mark 25 years since the Venezuelan people voted for the first time to approve a Constitution, in 200 years of the Republic,” the president recalled in his weekly program ‘Con Maduro +’.
In this sense, he had the Minister of Communes Ángel Prado as a guest, who said that “the people themselves will be the controller of that justice, to prevent minor crimes.” He added that 5,297 communal circuits will participate and celebrated that “communal spirit is in the streets.”
For his part, the first vice president of the National Assembly Pedro Infante said that this week the candidate nomination process begins in which those over 25 years of age can participate and meet the requirements established in the law. “It is a constitutional debt and it will be paid when the constitution turns 25 years old,” he said.
The head of Government of Caracas, Nahúm Fernández, added that “it is an unprecedented process and we have seen the response of the people in an impressive way… people are reorganizing themselves so as not to be left out.”
In the program it was explained that after November 27 comes the electoral campaign process, “which must be modest, house to house and decide without any type of intermediaries. Vote with conscience for who in your community is the most honest person to be a justice of the peace,” the president asked.
He indicated that the campaign seeks to disseminate the powers of a justice of the peace, who will report periodically to the communal circuits.
President Maduro said that this election is part of the “Great Transformation to build our new democracy. We are not copying from anyone, we are not taking it from an order given from the north. It is our democracy and there is no power in this world that will make us go back in our efforts to continue deepening our values.”
