Lustemberg: “It is unacceptable that 157,000 children live below the poverty line in Uruguay”

In an interview with Diario La R, pediatrician and senator-elect Cristina Lustemberg analyzed the recent electoral campaign and highlighted the importance of including the issue of childhood as a central axis in the country’s public policies. «Today the 157,000 children that Uruguay has living below the poverty line are unacceptable, and [esto] “It must be addressed with policies that include the comprehensiveness of the homes where these children live,” he stated.

A priority issue for the Frente Amplio

Lustemberg assured that the Frente Amplio has defined this issue as one of its main priorities. «It is one of the first issues that the Frente Amplio will address in its program and actions. In the 48 actions that Yamandú [Orsi] announced in Cologne two months ago, these are the most priority actions,” he said.

Balance of the campaign and future challenges

When consulted by La R about the political campaign, Lustemberg acknowledged ups and downs. “I think it has had its ups and downs, sometimes lacking proposals, but in the last stage there was a more fluid exchange of proposals between what the coalition proposed and what the Frente Amplio proposed,” he commented.

Likewise, he highlighted the importance of reopening the debate on the vote of the Uruguayan diaspora. “It is an opportunity, which at least is a discussion that Uruguay has to give,” he said.

With an electoral scenario concluded, Lustemberg stressed that political actors must focus on solving the country’s main problems, prioritizing those issues that affect children, health and the quality of life of the population.
