The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaextended his congratulations to the Uruguayan people for elections characterized by their democratic and peaceful character. He expressed his appreciation to the president-elect Yamandu Orsito the Frente Amplio and former president Pepe Mujica, highlighting the significance of their victory not only for Uruguay but for all of Latin America and the Caribbean.
In his message, Lula stressed the importance of this election as a shared triumph for the region. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue strengthening ties between Brazil and Uruguay, especially within the framework of Mercosur, as well as in other regional cooperation spaces.
Lula emphasized his desire to move forward together towards development that is fair and sustainable, preserving peace and promoting closer integration between Latin American countries.
Lula de Silva has an affinity with the Broad Front, since the Workers’ Party (PT) that brought him to government is in the same place on the spectrum as the leftist force, which is also the most voted party in the country.
For her part, the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaumalso issued a greeting through the social network X.com. “Congratulations to Yamandú Orsi and Carolina Cosse, for their victory as president and vice president of the sister Eastern Republic of Uruguay. The Broad Front returns to govern by the will of the Uruguayan people who once again demonstrate their democratic and progressive vocation,” said the leftist president.
From Chili, the president Gabriel Boric said: “Just called and congratulated @OrsiYamandu
for his victory in Uruguay. We talked about how to move forward together, as brother countries, in justice and unity. From Chile, all the success on this new path to Yamandú and the vice president, Carolina Cosse!”
Even the far-right Argentine president, Javier Mileicongratulated Orsi and Cosse. “The Argentine Republic congratulates the Uruguayan people for their exemplary civic day and salutes the elected president Yamandú Orsi for his victory. We ratify our commitment to work together with Uruguay to strengthen the shared agenda and the well-being of both countries,” the Argentine Foreign Ministry published on the social network.
Orsi pleads for national unity
On a historic election day, Yamandu Orsi was chosen as the new president of Uruguay with 49.66%, against 46.06% obtained by Álvaro Delgado, the now former candidate of the National Party.
In his first speech as president-elect, Orsi highlighted the night as a moment of profound gratitude. He extended a message of respect towards those who support other ideologies, recognizing their role in strengthening Uruguayan democracy.
Orsi stressed the importance of including all citizens in building a common future, calling for collaboration beyond political differences. “I will be the president who works for a more integrated society,” he stated, pledging not to leave anyone behind in economic, social and political terms.
For its part, Carolina Cosseelected vice president, made an emotional appearance, remembering former president Tabaré Vázquez before a crowd of Frente Amplio militants who gathered on the Ciudad Vieja promenade. “Today begins a path of peace and tolerance,” declared Cosse, promising a future of unity for the nation and reiterating the commitment to building a progressive course.
At the event, which took place in front of the NH Hotel, headquarters of the Frente Amplio campaign command, Orsi and Cosse offered their consecutive speeches, culminating the night with a call for hope and joint work to move towards a better Uruguay.
