Cozumel.- Belgium, the United States and France took the first three overall places in the 16th edition of the Full Ironman Cozumel 2024 in which the Latin American Championship was also held to designate five places in the world championships in Kona, Hawaii and Nice in France in 2025. Eduardo Pérez Sandi was the first Mexican to reach the finish line and finished in 19th position.
Amid applause and shouts of joy and support, the winners of the men’s and women’s branches rang the victory bell and crossed the finish line. “This is a sports competition that is already part of the history of Cozumel and that drives us as the Island of Sports,” said municipal president José Luis Chacón Méndez.
He highlighted the work of Governor Mara Lezama to promote sports activities and through the New Agreement for Welfare and Development to promote the arrival of visitors to this Magical Town.
The absolute winner was the Belgian Bart Aernouts who stopped the clock at seven hours 39 minutes and 24 seconds, after a battle in the marathon stage on the emblematic Rafael E. Melgar Avenue with Chris Leifermant, from the United States who clocked 07: 45:12.
In third position was the Frenchman Leon Chavalier who stopped the clock at 07:46:58 and with this he joined the three best triathletes of the competition that took place in the natural beauties of Cozumel.
In the women’s branch the winners were, in first place, Anne Reischmann with 08:34:08 while in second position came Lisa Perterer, from Austria, while in third position came the French Justine Mathieux who had a time of 08:51:03.
The municipal president, José Luis Chacón Méndez, led the starting shot; Juan Carlos Delgado, representing the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico; José Luis Sosa, the National President of the Mexican Sports Tourism Council and on behalf of Governor Mara Lezama, the director of the Parks and Museums Foundation, Juanita Alonso Marrufo.
