The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, assured this Saturday that he will grant the former Uruguayan president José ‘Pepe’ Mujica the Order of Boyacá, the “highest decoration” of his country, for his “struggle” and contributions to Latin American integration.
“I am going to decorate Pepe Mujica with the highest decoration of Colombia. The Boyacá Cross. Comrade Pepe for your entire fight, for your contribution to Latin American integration. Long live Pepe, long live Latin America and long live Colombia and Uruguay ( sic)”, Petro expressed in a message published on the social network X.
The Colombian president published the message with a photo in which he appears accompanied by Mujica, who governed Uruguay between 2010 and 2015.
The Order of Boyacá is Colombia’s highest decoration for military personnel and outstanding citizens.

Mujica then became known throughout the world for his austere way of life, on a farm on the outskirts of Montevideo, and his way of understanding life.
In 2022, the former Uruguayan president asked Colombians to accompany Petro, whom he defined as his “friend”, in the second round of the presidential elections to cultivate “a new society” peaceful and equitable.
