Romantic love: a myth that can be deadly

Romantic love: a myth that can be deadly

Within the framework of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against WomenWomen’s Space for a Life Free of Violence AC made an urgent call to reflect on the hidden dangers of idealized romantic love. According to data from UN Women, in Mexico between 9 and 10 women are murdered daily, evidencing an alarming context of violence that puts the lives of millions of women in the country at risk.

The violence behind romantic love

Often, romantic love serves as a facade to justify abusive behaviors such as excessive jealousy, control, and even physical aggression. This type of behavior, often normalized in relationships, perpetuates a cycle of violence that is essential to demystify.

According to INEGI figures, more than 19.1 million women in Mexico (64% of those surveyed) have suffered intimate partner violence. Many of them have experienced attacks of a severe or very severe nature, making it clear that this problem is not only common, but also one of the most serious violations of human rights in the country and worldwide.

“The false idea that love must be painful contributes to perpetuating this problem. “Demystifying romantic love is a crucial step to move towards the eradication of gender violence,” he explained. Marilú Rasso, executive director of Espacio Mujeres.

Warning signs in a violent relationship

Identifying abusive behaviors is key to preventing dangerous relationships. Some warning signs include:

  • Excessive jealousy and possessiveness.
  • Control over time, friends or clothing.
  • Constant humiliation and disqualifications.
  • Threats and physical violence.

How to help a woman facing gender violence?

Espacio Mujeres offers concrete recommendations to support those who suffer this type of violence:

  • Active listening: Provide a safe, judgment-free space for you to speak.
  • Believe in her: Validate her experience and let her know she is not alone.
  • Offers support: Help her make a safety plan and seek professional help.
  • Report and find out: Contact the authorities and use specialized help lines.
  • Share information: Disseminate resources and tools to prevent gender violence.

“Violence against women is learned, but it can also be unlearned. Educating in equality and respect from childhood is the key to preventing it,” highlighted Marilú Rasso.
